About
Dr. Haifeng Zhao is a leading roboticist specializing in deployable mechanisms, extraterrestrial drilling systems, and autonomous sample-collection robotics for space exploration. His research focuses on creating novel, reconfigurable manipulators and burrowing platforms capable of operating in the extreme environments of the Moon and beyond. Dr. Zhao’s most impactful work includes the design and analysis of an n(3-RRU) serial-parallel manipulator for on-orbit manipulation and capture, which has garnered 24 citations since its 2024 publication. He has also pioneered the development of a Dual-Archimedes Screw deep drilling system and a mole-type burrowing robot for ultra-deep lunar subsurface exploration, addressing the critical challenge of accessing scientifically valuable geological samples. His contributions extend to designing automatic sealing mechanisms for extraterrestrial sample-collecting robots, ensuring sample integrity during the demanding return to Earth. With a growing citation record and a portfolio of innovative hardware solutions, Dr. Zhao is making significant strides toward enabling the next generation of autonomous, deep-space robotic missions for planetary science and in-situ resource utilization.
