About
Ruijue Duan is pioneering the next generation of soft robotics through groundbreaking work on liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs)—a class of programmable materials that mimic and even surpass natural muscle performance. Her research centers on designing reconfigurable artificial muscles with unprecedented control over shape-morphing capabilities. In her highly cited 2025 study, Duan achieved centimeter-scale bulk LCE artificial muscles that combine strong mechanical properties with complex, designable shape transformations, opening new pathways for lifelike robotic motion. Her 2024 work further advanced the field by introducing reconfigurable director patterns, enabling multi-mode shape morphing within a single monolithic material—a feat previously thought impossible. By demonstrating that LCEs can be reprogrammed to adopt multiple, distinct morphing modes, Duan has solved a fundamental limitation of these materials. With her papers already accumulating citations in the competitive field of soft robotics, her contributions are rapidly shaping how researchers approach the design of adaptive, muscle-like actuators for next-generation robots. Duan’s work stands at the exciting intersection of materials science and robotics, promising more agile, versatile, and lifelike machines.
