About
Rudra Aryal is an atmospheric scientist whose research focuses on aerosol climatology, long-range aerosol transport, and the optical properties of atmospheric particles. His work combines surface-based and column-integrated measurements to characterize aerosol scattering and absorption, particularly in understudied regions. Aryal’s most-cited study (2014, 20 citations) compared near-surface and column aerosol scattering properties over the western North Atlantic Ocean at Bermuda, using micro-pulse lidar to reveal vertical distributions of aerosol backscattering. This work provided critical insights into how surface measurements represent the full atmospheric column. In a significant contribution to South Asian aerosol science, Aryal led a 2020 study (13 citations) analyzing eight years of AERONET data over Pokhara, Nepal, documenting spectral and seasonal variations in aerosol optical depth (AOD), single scattering albedo, and absorption aerosol optical depth—key parameters for understanding regional climate forcing and pollution transport from the Indo-Gangetic Plain. His 2021 follow-up (5 citations) further characterized AOD and Ångström exponents at Pokhara, revealing low average AOD values (0.21±0.12) during certain months. Aryal’s research bridges critical gaps in aerosol monitoring across data-sparse regions, advancing our understanding of atmospheric composition and radiative effects.
