About
Madhu Gyawali is an atmospheric scientist whose research centers on aerosol climatology, long-range aerosol transport, and the optical properties of atmospheric particulates in the Himalayan region. Her major contributions include establishing baseline aerosol data for Pokhara, Nepal—a critical yet understudied location downwind of major pollution sources. Her most cited work (2020, 13 citations) provides the first comprehensive analysis of aerosol optical depth (AOD), single scattering albedo (SSA), and absorption aerosol optical depth (AAOD) over an eight-year period (2010–2018) using AERONET data. This study revealed distinct seasonal and interannual patterns, highlighting the influence of transported biomass burning and dust aerosols. A related study (2021, 5 citations) further characterized monthly AOD and Ångström exponent variability, showing low average AOD values (0.21 ± 0.12) indicative of a relatively clean background state punctuated by episodic pollution events.
