Dr. Rosalind Archer is a leading figure in the field of electroactive polymers, with a particular focus on the development and application of polypyrrole-based actuators. Her most-cited work, "The application of polypyrrole trilayer actuators in microfluidics and robotics" (2008, 19 citations), represents a foundational contribution to soft robotics and microfluidic device design. In this seminal study, Archer pioneered the construction of trilayer actuators by growing identical polypyrrole films doped with dodecylbenzene sulfonate on either side of a poly(vinylidene fluoride) membrane. This innovative design created a self-contained system where the two PPy layers functioned as working and counter electrodes relative to each other, eliminating the need for a separate electrolyte bath.
