Robert A. Barnes is a leading figure in satellite remote sensing calibration, whose work has been foundational for ensuring the accuracy and consistency of Earth-observing instruments. His primary research areas focus on radiometric calibration techniques, particularly the innovative use of the Moon as a stable, on-orbit calibration target. Barnes’s most significant contribution is his leadership in developing the Robotic Lunar Observatory (ROLO) project, which created a spectral irradiance model of the Moon.
