About
Qiming Zhang is a researcher whose work spans the intersection of soft robotics, materials science, and wireless sensing technologies. Zhang's most notable contribution lies in the development of dielectric elastomer (DE) wound roll actuators — a significant advancement in electroactive polymer technology. His 2008 paper on wound roll dielectric elastomer actuators, which has garnered 64 citations, introduced a fabrication process capable of achieving high strain outputs of up to 12%, opening new possibilities for compact, high-bandwidth actuation systems applicable to robotics, prosthetic devices, minipumps, loudspeakers, and medical valves. This work helped establish dielectric elastomers as a practical platform for soft actuation, bridging laboratory materials research and real-world engineering applications. More recently, Zhang has expanded his research into human-computer and human-robot interaction through wireless sensing. His 2020 work on WiForce explores continuous contact force sensing and localization using wireless signals, addressing the limitations of binary touch interfaces in both digital environments and robotic manipulation tasks. Together, these contributions reflect Zhang's sustained commitment to developing intelligent, responsive physical systems — from compliant actuators to sophisticated sensing frameworks — making his research particularly relevant to students working in soft robotics, wearable technology, and interactive systems.
