About
P. J. Meintjes is a leading figure in time-domain astrophysics, specializing in the robotic optical follow-up of high-energy transients. As the principal investigator of the Watcher Robotic Telescope at Boyden Observatory, South Africa, Meintjes has driven critical contributions to the study of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), blazar variability, and variable stars. The Watcher telescope, a 40 cm Cassegrain system, was developed primarily for rapid optical observations of GRBs detected by gamma-ray satellites. In its first two years alone, Watcher responded to 141 of 224 GRBs, with 106 observations within 24 hours—demonstrating a remarkable response capability. Meintjes also implemented an automated photometry pipeline to enable near-real-time data analysis, a key innovation for transient science. Beyond GRBs, Meintjes has led intensive monitoring campaigns of gamma-ray blazars and the microquasar V404 Cygni, probing short- and long-term optical variability. With over 15 citations for the foundational photometry pipeline paper and ongoing upgrades to the Watcher system, Meintjes’ work continues to enable rapid, multi-wavelength insights into the most energetic phenomena in the universe.
