C. Kouveliotou is a pioneering astrophysicist renowned for her transformative work on gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and high-energy transients. Her research focuses on the prompt and afterglow emission of GRBs, using rapid-response robotic telescopes to capture the earliest moments of these cosmic explosions. A key contribution is her team’s detection of GRB 060927 at a redshift of 5.47, which provided the earliest rest-frame optical observation of a GRB and offered critical insights into the end of the cosmic dark ages. Her multiwavelength study of GRB 080810, one of the first bursts simultaneously observed by Swift and Fermi, mapped the broad-band spectral evolution in unprecedented detail, with that paper garnering 56 citations. Kouveliotou has also been instrumental in developing and deploying robotic observatories—including TAROT, Watcher, and the Goddard Robotic Telescope—to enable rapid GRB follow-ups.
