Dr. Nursuriati Jamil is a leading researcher in speech technology and human-robot interaction, with a particular focus on Malay language text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis. Her work addresses the critical challenge of creating natural, expressive speech for humanoid robots and interactive systems. Dr. Jamil’s major contributions include developing an improved syllabification method for Malay TTS, which enhances the naturalness of synthesized speech—a foundational paper that has garnered 35 citations. She also pioneered the first Malay language storytelling TTS corpus, specifically designed for humanoid robot storytellers, comprising over 9,500 syllables from children’s stories. This work, along with her rule-based expressive speech synthesis research, has laid the groundwork for more engaging human-robot communication.
