N. Burtnyk is a pioneering researcher in robotics, whose work has fundamentally shaped how robots interact with complex, unpredictable environments. His primary research areas include real-time collision avoidance, supervisory control for telerobotics, and 3D pose estimation. Burtnyk’s most impactful contribution is his "Obstacle count independent real-time collision avoidance" (2002, 30 citations), which introduced a safety-critical mode for teleoperating robotic manipulators.
