About

Minli Lan is a materials scientist whose research lies at the intersection of bioinspired design, responsive materials, and soft robotics. Her work focuses on developing multi-responsive actuators—materials that can bend, twist, or move in response to external stimuli like humidity, heat, or light—with a particular emphasis on overcoming the mechanical fragility that has long limited graphene oxide (GO)-based systems. In her most-cited paper, Lan drew inspiration from nacre, the iridescent mother-of-pearl, to create a GO-bacterial cellulose composite film that mimics the layered, brick-and-mortar structure of natural nacre. This bioinspired approach yielded an actuator that is not only multi-responsive but also remarkably strong and programmable, opening new possibilities for durable artificial muscles and intelligent mechanical components. With 14 citations since 2022, this work has already attracted attention from researchers in soft robotics and smart materials. Lan’s contributions are helping to bridge the gap between natural structural principles and high-performance synthetic actuators, offering a path toward more resilient and versatile materials for next-generation adaptive devices.
