About
Michael Loepfe is a pioneer in the emerging field of combustion-driven soft robotics. His research focuses on the intersection of material science, mechanical engineering, and bio-inspired design, with a particular emphasis on creating fully untethered, autonomous soft machines. Loepfe’s most impactful contribution is the development of the first untethered, jumping “roly-poly” soft robot, which is powered by high-energy-density nitrous oxide–propane/butane gas mixtures. This landmark work, published in 2015 and garnering 127 citations, demonstrated a radical departure from battery-dependent designs by leveraging the specific energy content of hydrocarbons to achieve powerful, self-contained locomotion. In parallel, Loepfe has advanced the field of bio-inspired fluidics, notably by incorporating contrast agents into silicone to enable real-time flow-structure analysis of mammalian vein-inspired soft pumps. This work provides critical insights for designing soft circulatory systems.
