Michael Burton is a pioneering figure in Antarctic astronomy, renowned for exploiting the unique conditions of the Antarctic plateau to advance observational astrophysics. His key research areas include near-infrared and submillimetre astronomy, site characterization, and the development of autonomous robotic observatories for extreme environments. Burton’s major contributions are twofold: first, he demonstrated through the Near Infrared Sky Monitor (NISM) that the South Pole’s winter sky is over ten times darker in the near-infrared than temperate sites—a seminal finding with 20 citations that reshaped global observing strategies. Second, he led the creation of PLATO-R, a self-powered, robotic observatory deployable by Twin Otter aircraft, providing up to 1 kW of power and year-round data acquisition for experiments across the plateau.
