About
Colin S. Bonner is an instrumentation and observational astronomer whose research has centered on the development of autonomous robotic observatories engineered for operation in one of Earth's most extreme environments: the Antarctic plateau. His most significant contribution is the PLATO (PLATeau Observatory) system, a self-contained, fully robotic facility capable of generating its own electricity and heat while maintaining satellite communications in conditions as harsh as -70°C. Deployed at Dome A, Antarctica, in January 2008 by a Chinese expedition team, PLATO accumulated over 730 days of operational uptime and enabled a suite of astronomical and atmospheric experiments at one of the world's premier observing sites. Bonner's work extended to PLATO-R, a more portable successor deployable by Twin Otter aircraft, broadening access to remote Antarctic locations. He also contributed to SNODAR, an innovative 5 kHz acoustic radar capable of profiling atmospheric turbulence with remarkable 1-meter vertical resolution.
