About

Scott McDaid is a pioneering engineer and polar technologist whose work has been instrumental in enabling year-round autonomous science on the Antarctic plateau. His primary research focus lies in the development of robust, self-contained robotic observatories capable of withstanding the extreme conditions of the continent’s interior. McDaid’s major contribution is the design and deployment of the PLATO (PLATeau Observatory) system, a self-powered facility built into two 10-foot shipping containers. First deployed at Dome A in January 2008, PLATO has demonstrated remarkable endurance, accumulating over 730 days of uptime and providing up to 1 kW of continuous electrical power for astronomical and atmospheric experiments. Building on this success, McDaid developed PLATO-R, a more compact and transportable version deployable by Twin Otter aircraft, offering the same critical power, heat, and communications support. While his most-cited work (12 citations) highlights PLATO’s foundational role in Antarctic science, his engineering legacy is measured in the countless hours of data his systems have enabled.
