About
Dr. Merlijn Hutteman is a pioneering surgeon-scientist whose work sits at the intersection of advanced surgical technology and patient outcomes, with a primary focus on colorectal and thoracic oncology. His most impactful contribution is leading the landmark AVOID trial, a multicentre, randomised, phase 3 study published in 2024 that demonstrated how indocyanine green (ICG) near-infrared fluorescence imaging can assess bowel perfusion during minimally invasive colorectal surgery to prevent anastomotic leakage. This work, already cited 84 times, has the potential to become a new standard of care, directly reducing a devastating complication. In thoracic surgery, Dr. Hutteman has also advanced the field by investigating the feasibility of robot-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS) for higher-stage non-small cell lung cancer (stages IIB–IVA), showing promising outcomes in a challenging patient population. Through these contributions, he is shaping how fluorescence-guided surgery and robotic platforms are integrated into routine practice, improving both safety and oncologic efficacy. His research bridges the gap between technological innovation and measurable clinical benefit, making him a leading voice in the future of minimally invasive surgical oncology.
