Alexander L. Vahrmeijer is a pioneer in image-guided surgery, with his research fundamentally advancing how surgeons visualize anatomy and pathology during operations. His core expertise lies in fluorescence-guided surgery, particularly using near-infrared imaging with indocyanine green (ICG) to improve outcomes in minimally invasive and robotic procedures. Vahrmeijer’s major contributions include demonstrating that ICG-fluorescence can assess bowel perfusion to prevent anastomotic leakage—a finding validated in the landmark, multicentre AVOID trial (84 citations).
