About
Matthew F. McCabe is a leading researcher in remote sensing and environmental monitoring, with a focus on the intersection of satellite imagery, dust aerosol impacts, and robotic sensing for ecological applications. His major contributions include advancing the accuracy of satellite-derived surface reflectance data, particularly by quantifying how dust and adjacency effects degrade measurements from platforms like Landsat 8 and RapidEye. This work, published in 2017 and cited 48 times, has been instrumental in improving land surface product reliability for climate and vegetation studies. More recently, McCabe has pioneered the use of low-resolution LiDAR mounted on ground-based agile robots to map tree structural properties such as diameter at breast height (DBH), height, and crown volume. His 2023 and 2025 papers demonstrate that these robotic systems can efficiently and non-destructively estimate above-ground biomass and carbon stocks, offering a scalable alternative to traditional manual surveys. By merging robotics with environmental sensing, McCabe is helping to transform forestry and ecological monitoring, making data collection faster, more accurate, and less labor-intensive.
