About
Mariela Vargas is a pioneering biomedical and space mechatronics engineer whose research bridges the frontiers of robotic surgery, rehabilitation, and aerospace medicine. Her work focuses on developing cyber-human medical systems for extreme environments—from surgical simulators for microgravity to robotic exoskeletons for post-stroke rehabilitation. Vargas’s most influential contribution is the mechanical design of a novel laparoscopic simulator for telemedicine-assisted surgery during space missions (44 citations), a project conducted with the Surgical Engineering Society and Bioastronautics and Space Mechatronics Research Group.
