Marco Vountas is a leading figure in satellite-based aerosol remote sensing, whose work has fundamentally advanced our understanding of atmospheric aerosols and their climatic impacts. His research centers on the retrieval and long-term trend analysis of aerosol optical properties, with a particular focus on challenging environments like the Arctic cryosphere and snow-covered regions. Vountas is the principal developer of the Bremen AErosol Retrieval (BAER) algorithm, a cornerstone technique for deriving spectral aerosol optical thickness (AOT) from ocean color sensors such as MERIS and SeaWiFS. His highly cited 2012 study on global AERONET trend analysis (109 citations) provided critical insights into anthropogenic aerosol increases, while his subsequent work on MERIS retrievals (92 citations) and Arctic-specific algorithms (60 citations) has pushed the boundaries of passive remote sensing over bright surfaces. By pioneering methods to disentangle aerosol signals from highly reflective snow and ice, Vountas has enabled the first reliable AOT datasets for the Arctic, directly supporting research on Arctic amplification.
