About
Marco Guidali is a leading figure in neurorehabilitation robotics, whose work has fundamentally advanced the use of robotic exoskeletons for restoring arm function after stroke. His research centers on the design and clinical validation of task-specific, robot-assisted therapy, with a particular focus on the ARMin exoskeleton series. Guidali’s most impactful contribution is the landmark multicentre, parallel-group randomised trial demonstrating the efficacy of three-dimensional, task-specific robot therapy for the arm after stroke, a study that has garnered over 525 citations and established a new standard for evidence-based robotic rehabilitation. He was the lead developer of the ARMin III exoskeleton, a device praised for its ergonomic shoulder actuation and cited over 400 times, which has been successfully transferred from the lab into clinics and industry. Beyond hardware, Guidali pioneered the integration of virtual environments for training activities of daily living and developed adaptive algorithms that estimate and respond to a patient’s own contribution during therapy.
