About
Marcel Nicolaus is a leading polar researcher whose work illuminates the critical role of light in Arctic sea-ice systems. His core research focuses on the optical properties of sea ice and snow, and how changes in ice thickness and surface conditions alter the Arctic’s energy budget. In his highly cited 2015 study (85 citations), Nicolaus demonstrated that thinning ice and increased melt ponds dramatically enhance light transmission through the ice, a finding that reshaped understanding of solar energy deposition in the upper ocean. This work is foundational for predicting how a changing ice cover accelerates warming and alters marine ecosystems. Nicolaus also pioneered the use of under-ice hyperspectral radiation measurements to retrieve snow depth on Arctic sea ice (2021), a novel technique that leverages autonomous robotic vehicles to capture data previously inaccessible. Beyond the Arctic, his research extends to the Black Sea, where he has characterized thiotrophic mats in hypoxic zones.
