M. Ibrahimov is an astrophysicist specializing in the optical variability of active galactic nuclei and the development of robotic telescope systems for time-domain astronomy. His most impactful work focuses on the BL Lacertae object GC 0109+224, where he led the most comprehensive optical monitoring campaign ever published on this source. Using data collected primarily by the robotic telescope at the Perugia University Observatory from 1994 to 2002, his two seminal papers (with 64 and 48 citations respectively) provided unprecedented multi-band BVRcIc observations, revealing the object's variability timescales and multiband behavior. Ibrahimov also contributed significantly to the Angstrom Project, developing the Alert System (APAS) for real-time detection of extragalactic microlensing events toward the Andromeda Galaxy, a system that enabled rapid identification of candidate events using a distributed network of two-meter telescopes. More recently, he has been instrumental in establishing the first telescope of the Russian–Cuban Observatory—a wide-field 20-cm robotic facility in Havana—marking an important step in expanding observational capabilities for time-domain astrophysics.
