About

M. Azzaro is a leading engineer and astronomer whose work has been instrumental in enabling the next generation of massive spectroscopic surveys. His primary research focus is the design and development of high-precision robotic fiber positioners, the critical technology that allows telescopes to simultaneously capture spectra from thousands of celestial objects. Azzaro’s most significant contribution is his central role in creating the 5,020-robot focal plane system for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), a project that has already garnered 175 citations. This system, installed on the Mayall Telescope, automatically reconfigures its fiber optics every 10–20 minutes to a precision of several microns, a feat that makes DESI’s ambitious dark energy measurements possible.
