About
Dr. Luis Phillipe Tosi is a pioneering roboticist and aerospace engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, whose work is redefining the frontiers of space exploration. His research centers on two bold frontiers: additive manufacturing for extreme environments and autonomous robotic systems for planetary and ocean-world exploration. Tosi’s most influential work, “Towards additively manufacturing excavating tools for future robotic space exploration” (22 citations), demonstrated that laser powder bed fusion can produce robust digging implements from alloys like Ti-6Al-4V and Inconel 625, directly enabling in-situ resource utilization on the Moon and Mars. He is the lead architect of the EELS (Exobiology Extant Life Surveyor) robot, a snake-like, self-adapting platform designed for one-shot missions into ice fissures on Enceladus or Europa—a paradigm shift from incremental to adaptive exploration. Tosi also conceived the SWIM (Sensing with Independent Micro-swimmers) concept, deploying dozens of tiny, autonomous underwater robots to explore subsurface oceans on icy moons. With over 30 publications and multiple NASA patents, his work bridges materials science, robotics, and astrobiology, positioning him as a key figure in humanity’s quest to discover life beyond Earth.
