About
Lu Mao is a biomedical engineer whose research focuses on the intersection of robotics and therapeutic ultrasound, particularly for noninvasive cancer treatments. His most notable contribution is the development of Robotically Assisted Sonic Therapy (RAST), a novel approach for noninvasive hepatic ablation. In a landmark 2019 study using a porcine model, Mao demonstrated that RAST could effectively ablate liver tissue while mitigating body wall damage through a modified pulse sequence—a critical advancement for clinical translation. This work, which has accumulated 44 citations, addresses a major limitation of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) by reducing collateral thermal injury to the skin and muscle.
