About
Lirui Shen is a pioneering robotics researcher whose work sits at the intersection of aerial manipulation, autonomous navigation, and intelligent control systems. His primary research focuses on developing advanced control strategies for unmanned aerial manipulators (UAMs)—novel flying robots that combine UAVs with multi-degree-of-freedom robotic arms to perform dangerous or inaccessible tasks. Shen’s most cited work introduces a trajectory tracking approach using nonsingular global fast terminal sliding mode control integrated with RBF neural networks, achieving robust performance for these underactuated systems. He further advanced the field by proposing a composite control scheme with extended state observers for precise contact force regulation during aerial manipulation tasks. Beyond aerial systems, Shen has made notable contributions to autonomous exploration in unknown environments, developing LiDAR-based deep reinforcement learning methods for mobile robots—work with significant applications in mine exploration, environmental modeling, and search-and-rescue operations. His research, accumulating over 14 citations across key publications from 2022 to 2025, demonstrates a clear trajectory toward creating more capable, intelligent robots that can actively interact with and navigate complex, unstructured environments.
