About
Lining Wang is pioneering the integration of robotics and smart materials for next-generation infrastructure. Her research focuses on developing self-sensing cementitious composites—materials that can monitor their own structural health—and advancing robotic spray technologies for their application. In her highly cited 2024 study, Wang introduced a robotic sprayable self-sensing cementitious material designed for smart structural health monitoring, a breakthrough that has already garnered 12 citations for its potential to transform how we detect damage in concrete structures. Her subsequent work systematically evaluated how 3D robotic spray parameters affect the performance of these sensing coatings, demonstrating that precise robotic application can enhance the material’s multifunctional capabilities. By merging robotics, materials science, and civil engineering, Wang is creating scalable, automated solutions for embedding intelligence into our built environment. Her contributions are paving the way for safer, more resilient infrastructure—bridges, tunnels, and buildings that can “feel” and report their own condition in real time.
