About

Lingxiao Cao is a leading researcher in the field of advanced functional materials, with a primary focus on ferromagnetic liquid metals and their applications in soft robotics and flexible electronics. Cao’s most significant contribution is the development of a groundbreaking ferromagnetic liquid metal putty-like material, reported in a highly cited 2020 paper (131 citations). This material uniquely combines reconfigurable magnetic polarity, shape-transformability, a stiffening effect, and high electrical conductivity—properties that were previously considered mutually exclusive. By engineering this “plasticine”-like composite, Cao solved a critical challenge in designing reconfigurable ferromagnetic conductors, enabling the material to be used as printable magnetic and conductive ink. This work has been featured as a cover article in *Advanced Materials*, highlighting its transformative potential. Cao’s innovations directly enable next-generation technologies, from adaptive soft grippers to stretchable circuits that can change their magnetic response on demand. With a growing citation impact, Cao’s research bridges materials science and engineering, offering a versatile platform for intelligent, shape-morphing devices that respond to both mechanical and magnetic stimuli.
