About
Limeng Zhao is a rising leader in soft robotics and smart materials, whose work bridges the critical gap between soft and rigid actuation systems. Her most impactful contribution is the development of a bio-inspired soft-rigid hybrid artificial muscle, which synergistically combines liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) with helical metal wires. This innovation, detailed in her 2023 paper (67 citations), overcomes the traditional trade-off between load-bearing capacity and deformation range, offering a new paradigm for robotic applications requiring both strength and flexibility. Zhao has also pioneered the use of 3D printing to fabricate LCE-based actuators, enabling the creation of an inchworm-inspired crawling soft robot (18 citations). By solving the challenge of permanently aligning liquid crystal mesogens within a polymer network, she has unlocked the full potential of LCEs for large-strain, fast-response actuation. Her work is not only advancing the fundamental science of smart materials but also providing practical, manufacturable solutions for next-generation soft robots. Zhao’s research is essential reading for anyone interested in the future of bio-inspired robotics and adaptive materials.
