Kiyoo Takeyasu is a pioneering figure in robotics, best known for his foundational work in intelligent robotic manipulation and tactile control. His research, primarily conducted in the early 1970s, focused on creating robots capable of cognition, decision-making, and precise physical interaction with their environment. Takeyasu’s major contributions include developing one of the first prototype intelligent robots that could recognize and assemble three-dimensional objects from plan drawings, a breakthrough that integrated computer vision, articulated mechanical hands, and digital computing. He also invented the ‘HI‐T‐HAND’ Expert 1, a tactile-controlled robot with a flexible wrist that could insert pistons into cylinders with a clearance of about 20 microns—faster and more dexterously than human hands. This work culminated in precision insertion control robots achieving clearances of only a few microns. With his most-cited paper garnering 57 citations, Takeyasu’s innovations laid the groundwork for modern assembly-line automation and sensor-based robotic control. His achievements remain a testament to the early vision of robots that can see, feel, and act with human-like skill.
