About
Kendal Tinsley is a rising innovator in soft robotics and bioinspired design, whose work draws from the elegant mechanics of marine life to create next-generation robotic systems. Her research centers on multistable structures and biomimetic locomotion, with a particular focus on how flexibility and rigidity can be harnessed together for complex motion. In her highly cited 2023 study on the manta ray–inspired multistable soft robot, Tinsley demonstrated how asymmetric fin positioning—mimicking the manta ray’s turning maneuvers—enables tighter turning radii and faster speeds than traditional soft robots. This work, already garnering 12 citations, represents a significant step forward in understanding how soft, flexible components can be programmed to hold stable, load-bearing shapes while still moving fluidly. By bridging animal biomechanics with multistable material design, Tinsley is opening new pathways for agile, resilient robots capable of navigating cluttered or delicate environments. Her contributions are especially notable for their elegance: translating a complex biological behavior into a simple, controllable robotic principle. As soft robotics continues to mature, Tinsley’s insights into multistability and bioinspired control will likely influence both underwater exploration and medical devices.
