About

Kailong Jin is pioneering the frontier of smart materials and advanced manufacturing, with a focus on 3D and 4D printing of stimuli-responsive polymers. His research centers on creating functional hydrogels and liquid crystal-based structures that can sense, heal, and adapt to their environment—mimicking nature’s most ingenious designs. Jin’s major contributions include the development of high-speed, high-resolution 3D printing of self-healing, ion-conductive hydrogels via μCLIP, enabling autonomous repair in soft robotics and health-monitoring ionotronic devices. He has also advanced multimaterial vat photopolymerization to print liquid crystals with thermal sensing capability, and introduced a liquid crystal templating-assisted approach for 4D printing hygro-responsive structures inspired by seed capsules that change shape upon hydration. His most-cited works (2022–2023) have already garnered over 90 citations, reflecting their immediate impact. Notably, his seed capsule-inspired 4D printing was featured on the cover of *Advanced Functional Materials*, highlighting its significance. Jin’s work is not only pushing the boundaries of additive manufacturing but also laying the groundwork for next-generation adaptive materials that respond intelligently to environmental cues.
