About

Ji-Eun Yeo is a rising leader in bioinspired photonics and adaptive vision systems, whose work bridges the gap between natural optical marvels and next-generation imaging technologies. Her primary research focuses on developing artificial vision and retroreflective sensors that mimic the sophisticated visual strategies of cephalopods and insects. Yeo’s most impactful contribution is the cuttlefish eye–inspired artificial vision system (2023, 57 citations), which addresses a critical challenge in mobile robotics—achieving high-quality, high-contrast imaging under uneven illumination. By emulating the cuttlefish’s W-shaped pupil and dynamic retinal adaptation, her design enables autonomous vehicles and drones to see clearly in vertically uneven light, dramatically improving image contrast and acuity.
