About
J. Varela is a leading figure in the development of dedicated nuclear medicine instrumentation, with a primary focus on breast cancer imaging. Their most significant contribution is the design and realization of the Clear-PEM scanner, a pioneering dual-head Positron Emission Mammography (PEM) system. Varela’s work introduced a novel detector architecture based on Avalanche Photodiode (APD) modules, which uniquely enabled precise depth-of-interaction (DOI) measurement—achieving a 2 mm resolution within 20 mm LYSO:Ce crystals.
