About
Hyunsik Yoon is a leading figure in bioinspired adhesive systems, whose work bridges fundamental mechanics and practical robotics. His research focuses on the design, fabrication, and application of dry adhesives—materials that mimic the remarkable clinging abilities of geckos and other creatures. Yoon’s major contribution lies in advancing these adhesives from simple prototypes to robust, functional systems. His highly cited 2011 Feature Article, “Towards the Next Level of Bioinspired Dry Adhesives” (185 citations), systematically outlined strategies for creating hierarchical, multiscale structures that dramatically improve adhesion and durability, setting a roadmap for the field. More recently, Yoon has tackled the challenge of underwater adhesion, a notoriously difficult problem. In his 2025 work, “Starfish-inspired tube feet for temporary and switchable underwater adhesion and transportation” (6 citations), he introduces a soft, starfish-inspired mechanism that enables reversible attachment and object manipulation in wet environments—a critical step for soft robotics and marine applications.
