About

Hwa‐Yaw Tam is a leading figure in optical fiber sensing, with a particular focus on polymer optical fiber (POF) technology for tactile and force sensing applications. His work bridges the gap between photonics and robotics, creating smart materials that can “feel.” In a landmark 2023 study, Tam developed an artificial skin for robotic fingers using a polymer optical fiber Bragg grating array embedded in silicone, enabling highly sensitive tactile perception. This innovation is critical for advancing human-robot interaction and prosthetic technology. Complementing this, Tam engineered a Fabry–Pérot cavity-based contact force sensor that achieves exceptional precision over a broad operational range, using a micro-air cavity fabricated within a single-mode fiber.
