About

Hosung Kang is a materials scientist whose research focuses on the development of bioinspired actuators and functional metal oxide nanostructures. His most notable contribution is the creation of a novel hygromorphic actuator from a metal oxide film, driven by a nano-capillary forest structure. In his highly cited 2017 paper, Kang introduced an electrochemical method to fabricate a superhydrophilic, free-standing titanium oxide nano-capillary forest with an exceptionally high aspect ratio of approximately 80. This design ingeniously exploits an inhomogeneous initial gap between the top and bottom surfaces of the film, enabling rapid, reversible bending in response to humidity changes.
