About

Hocheol Gwac is pioneering the intersection of soft robotics and wearable sensor technology, with a focus on bioinspired materials for aquatic and human-interactive devices. His key research areas include stimuli-responsive hydrogels, carbon nanotube (CNT) yarn-based actuators, and multifunctional electronic skin (E-skin) systems. Gwac’s major contributions include the development of a poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) hydrogel for diving and surfacing devices, enabling micro aquatic robots to achieve three-dimensional locomotion without traditional motors—a breakthrough for remote sensing and search-and-rescue applications. He also created a self-powered multidirectional strain sensor using coiled CNT yarns, advancing E-skin capabilities for health monitoring and robotics. His work on wearable multi-plied potentiometric sensors, functioning as an electronic tongue, allows robots to detect taste and assess water quality or food freshness.
