Hideyuki Tokuda is a pioneering figure in ubiquitous and embedded computing, whose work has fundamentally shaped how we integrate sensing, actuation, and networking into everyday environments. His research spans distributed real-time systems, sensor networks, and middleware for smart spaces. Tokuda is best known for advancing the concept of "spatiotemporal" sensing—where sensor nodes are dynamically repositioned by robotic actuators to improve coverage, accuracy, and adaptability. His influential paper on Spinning Sensors middleware (2008) introduced a robotic sensor node mechanism that merges static sensors with mobile actuators, dramatically expanding sensing space and precision.
