About
Hidekatsu Yoshioka is a leading figure in dermatological research, with a primary focus on the molecular architecture of the skin and the mechanisms underlying autoimmune blistering diseases. His most significant contribution is the discovery and characterization of epiplakin, a novel member of the plakin family of cytolinker proteins. Originally identified as a 450-kDa human epidermal autoantigen in a patient with a subepidermal blistering disease, Yoshioka’s team went on to clone the full-length protein, revealing it to be a massive 552-kDa molecule comprising 5,065 amino acids. This seminal work, published in 2001 and cited over 60 times, established epiplakin as a critical structural component of the epidermal cytoskeleton.
