About

Heming Wei is a pioneering researcher at the frontier of submillimeter-scale robotics and advanced mechanical metamaterials. His most impactful work, the 2022 paper on "Submillimeter-scale multimaterial terrestrial robots" (136 citations), introduces a groundbreaking class of tiny robots that can walk, crawl, and jump—opening transformative possibilities for minimally invasive surgery and cellular manipulation. By integrating diverse materials at microscopic scales, Wei has overcome fundamental challenges in small-scale locomotion and fabrication. His research also extends to fiber-optic triaxial force sensors for guidewire tips (2024), addressing the critical need for haptic feedback in interventional robotics to reduce surgical complications. Additionally, Wei contributed to the development of microscale 3D origami-architected metamaterials, enabling multifunctional structures through folding at the micro- and nanoscale. This work, featured in *Small* (2020), expands the design space for mechanical metamaterials with applications in deployable structures and adaptive materials. With a growing citation impact and a focus on translating micro-robotics from lab to clinic, Wei is shaping the future of medical devices and bioengineering.
