About
Gordon G. Kuljian is a recognized authority in marine surface preparation and coating removal, with a career dedicated to advancing waterjetting technology for shipbuilding and repair. His research focuses on evaluating and improving the productivity of high-pressure waterjetting systems, particularly for large-scale marine applications. In a pivotal 1999 study commissioned by the National Shipbuilding Research Program, Kuljian conducted ten on-site visits to ships undergoing repair, systematically assessing waterjetting productivity for coating removal on representative vessel areas. This work established critical benchmarks for the industry. Building on these findings, his 2002 research documented significant technological breakthroughs in robotic waterjetting equipment, enabling shipyards to achieve high-production hull treatment and selective paint removal—down to individual layers—on decks, vertical surfaces, and other large marine structures. Though his most-cited papers each hold three citations, their practical impact is substantial: they have guided the adoption of safer, more efficient, and environmentally preferable alternatives to traditional abrasive blasting. Kuljian’s contributions remain foundational for engineers and researchers working to modernize marine maintenance and extend vessel service life.
