Ethan Dmitrovsky is a pioneering cancer researcher whose work has fundamentally reshaped our understanding of cell cycle regulation in lung cancer. His research centers on cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs) and their role in tumorigenesis, with a particular focus on exploiting these pathways for targeted therapy. Dmitrovsky’s major contribution lies in elucidating the concept of “anaphase catastrophe”—a novel mechanism of cell death triggered by CDK inhibition in cancer cells with supernumerary centrosomes. His landmark 2009 study demonstrated that targeting the cyclin E-CDK2 complex not only suppresses lung cancer growth but does so through this previously unrecognized mitotic vulnerability, garnering 67 citations.
