About
Emil Popow is a key figure in the development of fully autonomous astronomical observatories, with his primary research focus on robotic telescope systems and stellar activity monitoring. His most significant contribution is the conception and realization of the STELLA (STELLar Activity) robotic observatory, a groundbreaking facility located at the Teide Observatory in Tenerife, Spain. Popow’s work demonstrated that not only the telescopes but the entire observatory could operate without any human presence, even eliminating the need for remote control. This achievement, detailed in his highly cited 2004 paper (115 citations), revolutionized automated astrophysical data collection. The STELLA observatory, inaugurated in 2006, features two fully automatic telescopes (STELLA-I and STELLA-II) designed for long-term stellar monitoring. His follow-up 2010 paper (56 citations) documented the facility’s operational success and its impact on time-domain astronomy. Popow’s innovations have enabled unprecedented continuous observations of stellar activity cycles, providing crucial data for understanding solar-like stars. His work at the Astrophysical Institute Potsdam (AIP) in collaboration with the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) established a new paradigm for cost-effective, high-cadence astronomical research, inspiring subsequent robotic observatory projects worldwide.
