Daniel Dichek is a pioneering aerospace and robotic systems engineer whose work focuses on enabling access to some of the most extreme and inaccessible environments in the solar system—subsurface oceans on icy moons like Europa. His primary research areas span planetary mission design, cryogenic robotics, and instrumentation for extreme underwater environments. Dichek’s major contributions include leading the conceptual design of the VERNE (Vertical Entry Robot for Navigating Europa) mission, a novel melt-probe concept that would autonomously descend through miles of ice to reach a subsurface ocean.
