About

Charles Alcock is a distinguished astronomer whose career has been defined by pioneering efforts to census the small, icy bodies of the outer Solar System. His research focuses primarily on trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs), the Kuiper Belt, and the Oort Cloud — the remote reservoirs of primitive material that hold clues to the early history of our Solar System. Alcock has been a driving force behind the Taiwanese-American Occultation Survey (TAOS), an innovative project using an array of robotic wide-field telescopes to detect Kuiper Belt objects through stellar occultations, a technique capable of revealing bodies far too faint for direct imaging.
