Carlos Allende Prieto is a leading figure in astrophysical instrumentation and dark energy research, best known for his pivotal contributions to the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). His work centers on the design and implementation of robotic systems for large-scale spectroscopic surveys, enabling precise measurements of cosmic expansion. As a key architect of DESI’s revolutionary focal plane, he helped develop the system of 5,020 robotic fiber positioners that autonomously retarget optical fibers every 10–20 minutes with micron-level precision—a feat that has garnered over 175 citations.
