About
Dr. E. Buckley-Geer is a leading experimental cosmologist whose work centers on the design, construction, and scientific exploitation of large-scale spectroscopic surveys, most notably the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). As a key contributor to the DESI collaboration, Buckley-Geer helped bring to life the most powerful multi-object spectrograph in the world, an instrument now surveying over 40 million galaxies and quasars to unravel the nature of dark energy. Their instrumental expertise is foundational to DESI’s ability to measure precise redshifts and employ the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation technique, mapping the expansion history of the universe with unprecedented accuracy. This flagship project, detailed in their highly cited 2022 overview paper (over 10 citations), represents a decade of engineering and scientific vision. Through this work, Buckley-Geer has directly enabled one of the most ambitious cosmological experiments ever undertaken, placing them at the forefront of efforts to understand the accelerating universe and the fundamental physics driving cosmic evolution.
